Card Rankings in Standard Poker
Straight Flush
This is the highest type of poker hand and will consist of 5 cards that are of the same suit and in sequence.
If there are two straight flushes then the hand that has the highest top card is the better hand. Keep in mind that and can be counted as low depending on the sequence.
A Royal Flush is the highest straight flush and consists of an ace, king, queen, jack and 10 which are of the same suit.
Four of a Kind
This is a hand that has four cards of the same rank that is four jacks for instance. The fifth card in the hand can be anything and is called the kicker.
If there are two four of a kind then the hand that has the higher set of four cards is better. If two players happen to have four of a kind that are of the same rank then the kicker will decide which hand is best.
Full House
This 5 card hand will have 3 cards of one rank and 2 cards of another rank.
If you compare full houses then the rank of three cards will determine the better hand. If however the three cards are equal then the rank of the pairs will decide the better hand.
Flush
A flush consists of 5 cards that are of the same suit but do not have to be in sequence.
If there are two flushes then the highest card will determine the better hand. If these are equal then the second highest needs to be looked at and so on and so forth.
Straight
This is 5 cards that are in sequence but of different suits.
In a straight the higher ranking card is better. Keep in mind that ace can either be low or high depending on the sequence.

Three of a Kind
This is a hand that has three cards that are of the same rank and two cards that are unequal.
The hand that has three equal cards of a better rank is the higher hand. If the three are of equal rank then the higher ranked card from the other 2 cards will determine the higher ranked hand.
Two Pair
This is a hand that has 2 cards which are of equal rank. The highest pair will win no matter what the other three cards are. If the highest pairs are equal then the second highest pair is looked at. If both pairs are the same then the remaining card is looked at to determine the winner.
Pair
This is where the hand will have two cards that are of equal rank and three cards which are all different.
